Surge Protection for PV Systems

Garching, 30. July 2023 – Raycap, an international manufacturer of electronic components for surge protection, surge protection solutions, connectivity, and monitoring systems, is expanding its portfolio of surge protection junction boxes for PV inverters with a new model to protect DC-side power. The ready-to-connect ProTec PV Box 7Y is a particularly compact three-string solution that offers reliable protection against damage caused by electrical surges.

Lightning protection standards such as DIN VDE 0100-443 focus primarily on protecting the AC side of a building. However, the electrotechnical characteristics of a rooftop PV system require close consideration – and special protection – of the DC power side. For DC-side protection of PV systems, Raycap has developed compact and easy-to-install ProTec PV boxes, and the range has been extended with the new ProTec PV-Box 7Y.

The new ready-to-connect ProTec PV-Box 7Y is a further development of the proven ProTec PV-Box from Raycap. It impresses with its reliable surge protection in a compact design. The pre-assembled housings are equipped with type 1+2 and type 2 arresters for 1100 V and 1500 V DC and comply with the IEC/EN 61643-31 standard.

Up to three MPPs (maximum power points) can be connected to the ProTec PV Box 7y – while maintaining the same high level of protection. This makes the ProTec PV Box 7y a particularly compact three-string solution. Since installation space on the roof is usually limited, the compact design provides a major advantage during installation. The UV-stable enclosure is supplied with a drilling template that makes wall mounting on the DC side of the inverter quick and easy. The product is suitable for indoor and outdoor installations thanks to protection class IP 67.

Raycap has also further simplified the installation itself. The strings are easy to connect using push-in connectors with cable feed-throughs. Alternatively, there is a version with MC4 connectors that can be easily attached without tools. A transparent lid makes the status display easy to read.
